General Questions

Luwawa Forest Lodge is approximately 3 hours drive from Kamuzu International Airport in the country’s capital Lilongwe on the M1 main arterial route North. There is a sign on the right hand side of the road with further signs leading to the Lodge.

Home to Luwawa Forest Lodge, the Viphya Plateau is a large area of high grassland rolling hills with an average height of 1,700m above sea level, abundant in bird life and beautiful wild flowers. An ideal location for hiking and outdoor adventure activities.

Luwawa has a temperate/subtropical climate being quite cool at night and warm during the day. We’re pleased to have a comfortable and healthy climate with the benefit of being mosquito free.

Luwawa has a variety of accommodation from self contained self catering cottages, ensuite family chalets that sleep 4, budget twin and single rooms, and even a hostel block and camping site, all at mid range prices. Find out more on our accommodation page.

Yes! Luwawa, is the premier outdoor activity centre of Malawi! We have lots of family activities and family accommodation too. Feel at home with your family here.

Yes. We have a conference room that can seat 30 delegates or employees boardroom style. We offer free water too and have plenty of parking for your guests. If you would like to combine your conference with team building exercises, we have some excellent activities you can plan. Please let us know your requirements and we will get straight back to you.

If you are planning on camping with us, then we have designated camping areas where open fires are allowed.

We are very flexible and offer a variety of accommodation types that will hopefully work for your large group. We have a hostel which sleeps 17 amongst many other options including a campsite. We’ve had a group of 52 stay with us in the past! Get in touch to discuss your booking and we’ll do what we can to help you. 

We have a cosy ‘Baobab Restaurant’ with a wonderful baobab tree incorporated into our roaring fireplace. Our restaurant provides an international cuisine and a good range of vegetarian dishes.

If you, or anyone in your party, have special dietary requirements, please let us know in advance and we can create a dish especially for you.

If you are likely to want room service during your stay with us, please discuss this when booking and we will make every effort to make this possible. If so, this would be available during usual restaurant hours.

Outdoor Questions

What ISN’T there to do?! We have many varied activities for people of all ages and abilities, families, and groups. Take a look at our activities page for more inspiration.

No. You can book activities on the day though some activities may require some preparation. It’s best to enquire when you arrive and we can put together an activities schedule for you. However, if you want to go on a multi-day excursion with us, let us know.

There are several local attractions not far from our Lodge which you can explore on your own or with a guide. Some highlights are the Donija Nkoma Cultural Village, Luwawa Falls (12 km from the Lodge), the Rose Quartz Mine (30 mins by car), the Kamwe Fire Tower View Point (a great spot for sundowners, a 5 km hike or short drive). Chat to us about the Luwawa Centre for Environmental Education… well worth a visit!

The Lodge is within an environmental protected zone (one of the first in Malawi), with amazing bird life. We also have occasional bush buck and other small animals. If you venture out onto the Viphya Plateau there is more opportunity to see wildlife.

Yes. We have 4 professional guides who can take you on birding walks, hiking tours and more. They have a wealth of knowledge including the history of the area as well as the fauna and flora that surrounds us.

The Donija Nkoma Cultural Village is within hiking distance of the Lodge and guests are welcome to visit on foot or you can drive there too. In fact, we encourage that you do! The Village offers immersive experiences with everything from a few hours to multi day interactions learning about genuine local culture of rural Malawi, accompanied by one of our tour guides. 

Yes. We have some great locally produced handicrafts at the Lodge that are available to purchase. These purchases help support the local community.

There is a local market only 1km away which sells a variety of produce and commodities. A useful visit if you’re camping with us.

Technical Questions

Yes. We have WIFI in the main Lodge area which works reasonably well.

We use the UK standard 3 pin square sockets and have some adapters available should your equipment require converting. Mention this when you check in and we will do what we can to assist.

We actually run the Lodge as much as possible on solar power but if the batteries go down we do have a small back up generator to keep us going.

Yes. We have a 4G cell phone tower only 4 km away situated on a hill by line of sight which gives a strong reception to all over our site.
